About the Author
BRUCE GOLDSTEIN is Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona. He has received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh for his classroom teaching and textbook writing. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Tufts University and his PhD in experimental psychology from Brown University; he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Biology Department at Harvard University before joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Bruce has published papers on a wide variety of topics, including retinal and cortical physiology, visual attention, and the perception of pictures. He is the author of SENSATION AND PERCEPTION, 9th Edition (Cengage, 2014), and the editor of the BLACKWELL HANDBOOK OF PERCEPTION (Blackwell, 2001) and the two-volume SAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PERCEPTION (Sage, 2010).

The broad spectrum of information given will be useful from backyard urban gardening on up to industrial, municipal, and farm recycling. The first quarter of the book gives you all you ever wanted to know on the science of composting--and more--along with some history. A discussion of materials, methods, structures, equipment, and uses is followed by a brief look at large-scale composting. The writing is an uneven mix of scientific detail and the anecdotal. Chemical reactions are described in exquisite detail, and yet most quotes, while attributed, are neither dated nor their source given. Stu Campbell and Kathleen Bond Borie's Let It Rot: The Gardener's Guide to Composting ( LJ 1/91) is more readable and inviting for the individual gardener. While useful for its in-depth, detailed coverage, Rodale's almost-textbook is recommended only for comprehensive gardening collections.

Excellent book about composting!

This was the first book I ever read about composting, a subject I was minimally interested in. After one reading I was hooked on composting! I bought the book about six months ago and have since read it over and over, always seeming to learn something new every time I read it. In the meantime I have read everything I can find about composting. This book seems to cover everything. The other things I read are generally just a different way of saying the very things that are in this book.
I believe the Rodale Book of Composting should be called the bible of composting for the everyday person.

A lifetime reference.

It's helpful so far. Be careful not to confuse this with the original.I did and bought it by mistake. Turns out to have been a happy accident.. The editors did a great job with the update. This copy was a 1992 version(newer than expected). Glad to have the real book. Rodale Press kept up standards. If you want to go to your favorite search engine and try to figure out which of the 30 different answers to same question are accurate, have fun. Rodale Press, in my opinion, remains an accurate source of information about gardening and composting. Glad to have the book. It will be a life long reference. Book came in great shape, nearly new condition.

Worth its weight in manure :-)

Although the bulk of the material contained in this book could be found online, it's still a worthwhile purchase. Indeed, it is a must have. The purchase price of the book will be quickly regained in the money you will save making your own compost rather than purchasing bagged compost or synthetic fertiliser.
A few of the chapters are more interesting than useful to the home gardener. For instance, one of the early chapters discusses the history of composting beginning with the ancient Akkadians. The final chapter discusses managing large scale compost operations (by large scale, I mean tens and hundreds of tons of waste) on the farm or as part of a municipal waste management strategy.
The core of the book, however, is very directly useful. A chapter is provided describing the chemistry of what goes on in composting, and what goes on as plants attempt to take nutrients from the soil. Another chapter describes the various types of life from microbes to insects and worms (including lovely line drawings) that inhabit a compost pile during the various phases of its lifecycle.
By far the most useful chapter is chapter 6, which provides a list of potential ingredients for your pile and suggestions on how to obtain them. Numerous charts are provided that indicate on balance whether an item should be considered a "green" or a "brown", and (should you desire more specifics) the actual NPK content of various ingredients. This is fully a fifth of the book.
The next most useful chapter is chapter 10, which gives suggestions for various sorts of compost bins you can buy or build. Another chapter describes tools like chippers and shredders that might be useful to you if you plan to make a fair amount of compost. Alternatives are suggested for the folks who don't need quite that much labour saving help.
I can't think of anything that is not in this book that I wish it had. Nor for that matter, can I think of anything that needs to be cut from it. It strikes the perfect balance between comprehensiveness and brevity.

About the Author
Herbert Zettl is a professor emeritus of the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department at San Francisco State University, where he headed the Institute of International Media Communication and received the California State Legislature Distinguished Teaching Award and the Broadcast Education Association's Distinguished Education Service Award. Prior to joining the SFSU faculty, Zettl worked at KOVR (Stockton-Sacramento) and as a producer-director at KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco, where he participated in a variety of CBS and NBC network television productions. Because of his outstanding contributions to the television profession, he was elected to the prestigious Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Northern California Chapter. He also is a member of the Broadcast Legends of the NATAS, Northern California Chapter. Zettl is the author of VIDEO BASICS and TELEVISION PRODUCTION HANDBOOK, which are translated into several languages and published internationally. His numerous articles on television production and media aesthetics have appeared in major media journals worldwide. He has lectured extensively on both subjects at universities and professional broadcast institutions both nationally and internationally. In addition, Zettl developed an interactive DVD-ROM, ZETTL'S VIDEOLAB 4.0 (Cengage Learning). His previous CD-ROM version won several prominent awards, including the Macromedia People's Choice Award, the New Media Invision Gold Medal for Higher Education, and Invision Silver Medals in the categories of Continuing Education and Use of Video.

You want to produce better TV/Film?

This book is a MUST read and MUST have for any aspiring filmmakers or TV producers. It is widely used and the only book that attempts to create a foundational theory of media aesthetics. Many production books touch on the theories behind the encoding of messages, but Zettl attempts to explain why audiences react the way they do to mediated productions. The only reason I'm giving this edition 4 stars instead of 5 is because some of the material seems dated, even though this is a brand new edition.

I had to work my way through this text for a senior level film class.

Wow. I'm a senior. I've been working and studying film/video for a number of years. I've never come across a textbook that is often times so overly technical and theoretical ever. I carry a 3.5 GPA. I consider myself a fairly intelligent guy. That being said, I've never endured a book that after reading the day's assigned material I found myself either sound asleep from boredom, or overwhelmed at the complexity of the theories being delivered and rarely thoroughly explained.

Filmmaking is an art. Yes, there are technical aspects to it that you need to know. But, at its essence, it is an art. This book attacks the topic as a series of mathematical equations and scientific formulas.

One last thing .... this book is ridiculously over priced. Beg your professor to find a different text. If they won't bend, save yourself a LOT of money and just rent it.

A MUST read by those who want to understand the Muslim psyche

Spelling mistakes aside - the author did a wonderful job in analyzing how the so-called holy book anchors into the psyche of the muslim - typical or otherwise . . . and you will eventually realize why they do not speak out against the atrocities that have become common place today (Today? They have been happening since 1400 years!) (Also read the Barbary Wars - the first overseas war of the US led by Thomas Jefferson)

A MUST read - especially by those whose business is global diplomacy - to understand how to deal with that segment of society and to foresee what works and what is guaranteed to fail despite contractual agreements with the lot.

I can keep writing . . . read the book instead!

A narcissistic dwarf

This book uses the quran and hadiths that are freely available for anyone who has the desire to check them out for themselves. As for muhammad being the 'perfect' man, and the quran the source of information for all things ..I come to the conclusion that both assertions are completely false. This book confirms what I have so far discovered about islam. This book should be read by all those who want answers as to why muslims are so readily inclined to descend into barbarity over trivialities. I believe this book needs to be widely read, especially by muslims who question whether ISIS is really islamic, and if they are behaving as the 'perfect man' proscribes.
