Can a woman ever really know herself if she doesn t know her mother?

From the author of the smash-hit bestseller Firefly Lane and True Colors comes a powerful, heartbreaking novel that illuminates the intricate mother-daughter bond and explores the enduring links between the present and the past

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time and all the way to the end. Thus begins an unexpected journey into the truth of Anya s life in war-torn Leningrad, more than five decades ago. Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their mother s life, and what they learn is a secret so terrible and terrifying that it will shake the very foundation of their family and change who they believe they are.

From Publishers Weekly
Female bonding is always good for a good cry, as Hannah (True Colors ) proves in her latest. Pacific Northwest apple country provides a beautiful, chilly setting for this family drama ignited by the death of a loving father whose two daughters have grown apart from each other and from their acid-tongued, Russian-born mother. After assuming responsibility for the family business, 40-year-old empty-nester Meredith finds it difficult to carry out her father's dying wish that she take care of her mother; Meredith's troubled marriage, her troubled relationship with her mother and her mother's increasingly troubled mind get in the way. Nina, Meredith's younger sister, takes a break from her globe-trotting photojournalism career to return home to do her share for their mother. How these three women find each other and themselves with the help of vodka and a trip to Alaska competes for emotional attention with the story within a story of WWII Leningrad. Readers will find it hard not to laugh a little and cry a little more as mother and daughters reach out to each other just in the nick of time. (Feb.)

From Booklist
The Whitson family is rocked by the sudden death of patriarch Evan, a warm, loving man who doted on his two adult daughters, Meredith and Nina, and his reserved Russian wife, Anya. Meredith, who runs the family business, and Nina, a photojournalist whose job takes her to war zones around the world, have never been able to connect with their cold, forbidding mother. When Anya begins to act strangely, Meredith thinks she belongs in a nursing home, but Nina decides to try to fulfill her father’s dying wish and get her mother to tell her and Meredith the elaborate fairy tales she used to share with them. Anya is initially reluctant, but once she begins, Nina realizes these tales are actually the story of Anya’s life in Stalinist Leningrad. Meredith and Nina decide to attempt to uncover the truth about their mother’s tragic past in the hope of understanding her, and themselves. Though the novel starts off fairly maudlin, it evolves into a gripping read, although it’s a tearjerker. Hannah’s previous books, including Firefly Lane (2008) and True Colors (2009), are tailor-made for book clubs, and her audience should find plenty to discuss in this equally enthralling entry. --Kristine Huntley

A must-read for everyone!
By Robin
This is one of the best books I have had the pleasure of reading. Not only from a storyline point of view, but also from a literary side - the writing is elegant, eloquent and simply a pleasure to feast your eyes and mind on. The descriptive text immediately conjures up the most vivid pictures (I hope this book is never made into a movie as it would destroy the beauty that a well-written book achieves). I am amazed at the way Kristin Hannah is able to jump from one character to the next, seamlessly, and actually get into that character's head so perfectly. It's like she IS those people! I was fascinated by the fact that she had described the Siege of Leningrad so well - I have been to St Petersburg and visited the Siege museum - it's horrific, fascinating and thought-provoking all in one. I have also been to several German and Polish concentration camps and not been as moved (still incredibly moving, I don't want to minimise the effect the latter have as well but differently so). It is hard to imagine what it must have been like for the Russian women in Leningrad under the Reign of Terror that winter; the psychological strain of Stalin's regime, the physical strain of the cold, the war and the famine, and the emotional strain of seeing your loved ones killed or die from starvation, illness and the cold. All these are so well portrayed by the author. In addition, I thought that the way she wove the two stories together through a fairy tale was exquisite - it kept me reading until the end. And the end...so satisfying in every way. This is a book that should be on everyone's MUST READ list!

It could have been better
By Robert Specking
I stayed with this book, even though it was frustrating, hoping it would get better. It did, but it would have been much better if it only would have contained the story in Russia. The first half was slow and the main characters very unlikable. The character flaws were overblown and the men too good to be true.
The Russian story is much more believe able and told in a way that made the reader feel the cold and hunger. I thought the end would be rewarding because of the style change but after Anya finishes her story the author goes back to the same trite style. Everything wraps up neatly, characters are brought together, and after 40 years of coldness and dysfunction everyone loves each other. It starts as a fairy tale and ends a fairy tale.

hard to put down
By Margaret D.
Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah is mostly about the difficult time that the Russian people had with the German siege during the Second World War and about Stalin's effect on the population of Leningrad [St. Petersburg now]. It has heart wrenching situations which are sad but it is based on historical research and gives an insight on how very difficult it was for the people living there at the time. It is written for the most part as a fairy tale which is very Russian in concept, as is storytelling. It is presented from a female perspective mostly but I think that the location and life situations would be of interest to everyone. I wasn't sure at first if I would like it but soon found it hard to put down.
