The book is the perfect book for people who want to understand Jewish prayers
By Israel Drazin
This book is a splendid addition to the many different kinds of siddurs (prayer books) published by one of the most prestigious Israeli publishing houses. It is designed for thoughtful high school students and adults who are seeking an extensive commentary to their siddur, for this book is filled with interesting explanations.

This siddur contains, among many other things, a foreword and a translations of the prayers by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks the previous chief rabbi of England, a preface by Matthew Miller, the publisher of Koren Press, and an introduction by and an extensive commentary of the prayers by Rabbi Dr. Jay Goldmintz. The siddur has an eye-catching design, interchangeable and thought-provoking formats, notes for reflection, and very useful appendixes that contain practical ideas that can enhance prayer.

Rabbi Sacks speaks about the three stages of prayer in his foreword: the opening of our eyes to wonder, approaching the presence of God, and coming back to earth. Rabbi Goldmintz offers four categories of commentary with a variety of approaches to the prayers, which increases their depth of meaning.

The following is an example of Rabbi Goldmintz’s commentary: The amida (also called the shemoneh esreh) is composed of 19 parts. Goldmintz lists all 19 parts, shows how they can be subdivided into three, explains the purpose of each part by referring to the Talmud and other sources, shows how the amida speaks to a central feature of prayer, offers the views of philosophers, explains the Hebrew word for prayer which has a different meaning than what many people suppose, discusses why the prayer was organized as it is, reveals the laws concerning this prayer, and suggests how one should pray before saying this prayer. All of this is done for just one of the many prayers in the siddur.

The siddur concludes with a transliteration of the mourner’s kaddish. This placement makes it easy for mourners who have difficulty reading Hebrew to find the kaddish and read it.
