What a sin... and boy did I ...

What a sin...and boy did I suffer. So many gratuitous sex scenes that took forever to consummate!!!! Not enough meat in the storyline and then to top it all off there is a right out of left field "goal" that was so far fetched and not at all cultivated. And FYI, Pepper, members of MC gangs in Florida don't call each other "bloke."

Mixed emotions. I wanted to like it more than I did.

Sin and Suffer is a MC second-chance romance by Pepper Winters. The introductions of each chapter are in a flashback journal entry and alternating POV by Arthur “Kill” Killian, or Cleo Price.

This book picks up where Ruin and Rule ends. Cleo is has been taken by Dagger Rose and Arthur is in the hospital suffering from a head injury. Kill is looking for revenge. Cleo is looking for answers and the truth.

I had pre-ordered S&S, but when it arrived, I was ill and couldn’t read it. I got the audio book too. I HAD to know what was going to happen. I’m not sure if it was because I was listening to the story vs. reading it, I didn’t enjoy the story as much as the first. The narrator was excellent. I switched to reading when I felt better hoping it would help me become more engrossed in the story because you can read faster than you listen to an audio book. I think the mystery that was so engaging in the first wasn’t there in the second.

Without giving spoilers away, I thought the author did try to create the mystery with the Wall Street and Kill’s master plan. I found the master plan somewhat stretched believability even with the current state of the US political system. The whole Cleo/Rubix kidnapping, I found it situation odd. Kill and Cleo seemed off too. Kill was protective in ways that didn’t make sense. Cleo had legitimate reasons to be mad at him for HUGE things but always swept her feelings under the rug because of some excuse for him. The sexy parts were boring towards the end. While it was good and interesting, it wasn’t as engrossing and satisfying as R&R. I was kind of disappointed.

Summary
Sin & Suffer is the conclusion of Cleo and Arthur's story. After the first book, Ruin & Rule, we find female lead Cleo captured by a rival MC club. Arthur will stop at nothing to get her back. Despite his declining health, he leads his club on a mission to find her. Will he get there in time to save her? Will he be able to avenge her?

What Did I Think?
After not quite liking book 1, I find myself reading book 2. Why, you ask? Well, I'm a known book masochist, so that's a silly question. In all seriousness, I just can't seem to leave a story without reaching its conclusion. (I must have the whole story!) It's a matter of hours vested versus hours lost. And unfortunately for me, the finale did little to change my initial perspective and tipped the scales towards hours lost. I had to know regardless.

Hopefully you've seen the movie Austin Powers. Do you remember the ridiculous plot Dr Evil hashed out in the film? Do you remember how much you laughed as it was revealed because the sheer silliness of it made you giddy? Yes, well, reading this book, I had that same feeling. That free flowing laughter of a completely comical plot was ever present. I can't really describe the lengths of which this book hit the cheesy factor without spoiling it, so sadly, I must be vague in my description.

The revenge and vigilantism in this book skirt the fringes of my tolerance for fiction. From book 1, we already know the main lead is a millionaire math genius motorcycle club president in love with his newly found amnesiac soulmate from his past. However reaching this story line is, it doesn't begin to compare with the retaliation plan and reveal of government scandal in this book. (Let the record state, I find this book is way over the top!) I can't even embellish the rating with good sex because I couldn't bring myself to care. And it's a shame. The love scenes were beautifully written. They were passionate and sweet. They would be panty melting if it felt at all believable. This left me feeling cheated. If the story would have been better, the sweet words and passionate love shared between the main characters wouldn't have fallen on deaf ears. Instead, I gave my rolling eyes a workout.

I won't ramble on. I didn't care for either book in this series, but despite my less than favorable review of this story, Pepper Winters is a wonderful writer. And some people like coffee while others like tea, so I encourage you to read her story and review it for yourself. Perhaps you will find it a more pleasant read than I..

About the Author

Allan C. Ornstein is a professor of education at St. John’s University. Dr. Ornstein has published more than 400 articles and 60 books. Francis P. Hunkins was a professor of education specializing in general curriculum, curriculum development, curriculum issues, and curriculum theory in the College of Education at the University of Washington for 35 years. Since retiring, Dr. Hunkins has remained active in writing educational textbooks. As a past president, he also remains active in the Association for Teaching and Curriculum. During his tenure at the University of Washington, Dr. Hunkins served as chairperson of the area of curriculum and instruction (1995–2000). He also consulted widely with school systems around the country. He twice was a visiting scholar at Monash University in Australia and was also a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong Institute of Education in 1999. Over his career, he has written 21 educational textbooks and numerous articles for educational journals. He makes his home with his wife, Dr. Patricia A. Hammill, in the Seattle area.

 

Norman Eng is an adjunct assistant professor at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College and City College of New York. His work focuses on twenty first century education reform and inequality. He recently co edited a special issue symposium on Amazon.com and other websites, “Twenty first Century Excellence in Education” (Society, 2015), which included contributions from scholars such as Nel Noddings, Carol Ann Tomlinson, Yong Zhao, and James Comer. Dr. Eng maintains an education blog called The Educated Society.

Learn to write properly

With the greatest of respect for Alif Baa and Mastering Arabic mentioned in the reviews below, neither teachs you good Arabic handwriting, and both also concern themselves with pronunciation and grammar. Writing Arabic, by contrast, concerns itself wholly with the Ruq'a script, the script most Arabs use for their everyday handwriting. The reviewers are right in saying that some knowledge of the Arabic script would be helpful (no, neccessary) before approaching this book - you need the ability to make out ordinary Arabic print (i.e. the calligraphic Naskh script) - and the reader should use this book in conjunction with another book on the Arabic language. However, for the serious student of Arabic, I can't recommend strongly enough the use of this book as soon as you know the alphabet. You'll also learn to read other people's handwriting - no easy thing.

Oh, don't be put off by the 1950's typewritten English script - unlike the other books on offer, no printed Arabic appears in this book, just good handwriting. The others show a little scrappy Naskh script (an extraordinarily difficult script to write properly) and print the rest. The aim of Writing Arabic is to teach you to write Arabic clearly.

[Note Summer 2005: a new book has come out that may be a more user-friendly way of learning good handwriting: Jane Wightwick and Mahmoud Gaafar's "Mastering Arabic Script" (not to be confused with the authors' "Mastering Arabic"), which also teaches ruq'a. I've not seen it yet, though. JL]

Excellently achieves its purpose.

If you want to learn how to write Arabic so that your handwriting would even fool an Arab, there is absolutely no better book available. Most other Arabic language books teach only naskh script, which is the Arabic equivalent of block printing and looks juvenile in handwriting. The few books that actually do deal with ruqah script don't really teach the student how to develop good penmanship. Anbody seriously interested in learning to write Arabic as it is written in the modern world cannot ignore this book.

Really Invaluable

If you've been developing your Arabic handwriting by imitating the printed script used in textbooks and other printed material, you're pretty much wasting your time. The 'Naskh' script is not used by Arabs in handwriting and attempts to imitate it only end up looking amateurish.

Mitchell's book is the only really good introduction into both the handwritten and calligraphic 'Ruq'ah' scripts that I know of. It has a very systematic approach, and comprehensive and thorough coverage which makes it relatively easy to locate specific details-- but since the individual sections are interdependent the student will have to work iteratively through the material front-to-back a number of times until it is completely mastered.

As alluded to in a number of reviews, this book is definitely 'old school'. It is a reproduction of a typewritten and handwritten manuscript, has a pretty high 'information density' (so the book itself is correspondigly deceptively small), and is unforgiving in its use of technical terminology, demanding focused attention from the reader.

Just to reiterate a point made by another reviewer, this book bears no relationship to Alif Baa at all. Alif Baa is a grammar tutorial that does not go into handwriting at all-- and vice versa, Mitchell's book presupposes quite some basic knowledge of Arabic orthography. In any case I'm surprised that someone would recommend Alif Baa under any circumstances, as that suffers, in my opinion, from a great many defects.

If you are used to modern typeset textbooks with four-color graphics, sidebars, and elaborate formatting, you may be disappointed by 'Writing Arabic'. If, however, you can take this book on its own terms, you should find it a valuable and reliable resource.

Both current-fed parallel and voltage-fed series resonant converters are fully investigated using mathematical analysis, computer simulations, and practical experiments to evaluate their properties and usability in practical systems. Two new resonant converters are proposed which show excellent dynamic soft switching performance suitable for wireless/contactless power transfer applications.

A masterpiece in both scope and detail.........

Henri Troyat has done a superb job of crafting the life story of Leo Tolstoy into something which almost reads as a novel, a page-turner in its own right. The intimacy with which he thoroughly knows of and understands Leo Tolstoy's life and his works is nothing short of remarkable, and this is a biography I would be surprised at seeing bettered any time down the road. Tolstoy is on view for all to see, from his world-renowned works, to personal letters written to close acquaintances, to his own personal diary, Troyat makes use of every available resource to give us an up close and personal view of Tolstoy's life. The research done in comprising this most thorough work of Tolstoy's life is simply astonishing. Troyat has crafted a masterpiece which is fun to read, though admittedly this was made a tad easier as it was biography of Tolstoy's life he had to work with.

Tolstoy is a man of many dichotomies and this is at least partly what makes his life so very interesting. He was one of the greatest writers of all time, yet he despised literature. He inspired a peace movement led by Gandhi, and yet at one time owned peasants (admittedly early on in his life). He wrote of how life should be lived, and yet could not get along with his own wife (and wound up dying in a train station at the age of 82). The life of Leo Tolstoy cannot be summarized in a few short paragraphs, and even if it could, it would be doing a great man a grave injustice. Tolstoy deserves a biography which is comprehensive in depth and contains details not only of his life but also of his works......Troyat has given us this. And throughout this book, Troyat draws comparisons between Tolstoy and characters in his literature, such as the time his brothers dragged him to a brothel at the age of 17, leaving him to feel ashamed afterwards (while in one of his works the character visits a brothel only to cry at the edge of the bed afterwards). Many other examples abound throughout the narrative where Tolstoy writes himself into his works. But the average reader would probably not be able to distinguish when Tolstoy in fact does this without the exceptional work of Henri Troyat. Throughout the book it is all too evident that this was a work which Troyat put his heart and soul into, giving us insight into a great man whose life was so wide-ranging, from his early life in Moscow, to his middle years in the Caucauses, to his later years on Yasnaya Polyana. Tolstoy deserves a biography which is a masterpiece in both scope and detail....and Henri Troyat has provided this magnificently.

Enlightening!

This book is very informative yet reads as lively as a Tolstoy novel. Reading this before, during, or after you read "War and Peace" is very enlightening. Interesting the fact that the author of "War and Peace" struggled with history in school and exclaimed that history was "nothing but a heap of myths and useless, trivial details, sprinkled with dates and names". Other wisdoms include "Bronchitis is an imaginary disease! Bronchitis is a metal!" Highly entertaining. I had to deduct one star due to the fact that there is not one picture in this biography which I find quite odd.

Overly detailed and opinionated

Tolstoy's biography by Troyat is thoroughly documented, and Tolstoy certainly is an interesting subject for a book. I recommend it for people looking for an authoritative source of information.
However, taken as a book to be read, not referenced, it has serious flaws. The main one, which I find inexcusable, is Troyat's comments throughout the book "explaining" Tolstoy to the reader, and being shocked at Tolstoy's inconsistencies. Troyat will show us a scene where Tolstoy lays down a plan for virtuous conduct in his diary, then breaks his own code. Troyat exclaims: "Paradox! Tolstoy is a strange man, breaking his own code". Well, Mr. Troyat, don't we all?
Then, at another instance, he will characterize, say, Turgenev's judgement of Tolstoy, as "lacking in psychology". Troyat, of course, would have known better. In other words, Troyat doesn't try to erase himself from the book, we see his footprints all over. The book should have been named "Troyat's superior knowledge of Tolstoy".
Another related problem with this book is excessive documentation. We are witness to too many changes of opinion in Tolstoy. For, say, his doubts about his feelings for Sofya Bers, this is revealing, but we are subjected to the same ceremony for each acquaintance made by Tolstoy. The point was well taken from the beginning: Tolstoy changed his opinion of himself and others very often. And again, I don't see this as strange: many people are like that. But by the fourth time I saw Tolstoy meet someone, then write on successive days "Excellent" "Superficial" "Vain" "Far superior to me" etc. I was about to give up on the book. In contrast, we don't see enough of what others thought of Tolstoy, and that is a pity, especially since the book's excessive focus on Tolstoy's inner struggle makes it grey and humorless.
To sum it up: can serve well as a reference book, but not as a novel. Read Tolstoy himself, he is more revealing.

This book is not so much a new edition of the English translation of Professor Mach's Contributions to the Analysis of the Sensations, which was published in 1897, but is, as the more comprehensive title indicates, an almost entirely new book. The Contributions originally appeared in 1886. The English translation of 1897 contained a certain amount of new matter, most of which was embodied by Professor Mach in his second edition (1900). Since then there have been three more editions: two of them, the third and the fifth, containing important changes and additions of such extent that the fifth edition, of which this translation is now offered to the English-speaking public, is a book nearly twice as long as the original English translation.

It may therefore be convenient to mention here the principal respects in which this book differs from the translation of 1897.

Mach, apart from being a physicist, is also a most knowledgeable psychologist and philosopher. This translation from the German is rather heavy handed and not easy to read, doing so, however, is rewarding. It is interesting to discover how many people besides Freud, were pursuing similar lines of thought.

Dante is the Man! Great conclusion to this series!

London scared the crap out of me at the end of SB, book 1! I knew she was planning to do something horrid to Dante for his so called betrayal. So I had attitude with London since the end of a SB. I am team Dante all the way and I totally agree with every decision and every action he executed in SB! I knew London had something up her sleeve. However, I had no idea London would resort to becoming an immature semi- drunk! After reading this delicious story and understanding her psyche a bit more, it's obvious her antics and the drinking were coping mechanisms. The little heffa's shenanigans did absolutely NOTHING to deter Dante, however. He loved. He indulged her. He took care of her until she did the unthinkable.....the club scene stunt. He lost control and she broke him. I cried as I witnessed how broken Dante became when he'd finally had enough of London and her antics. The only saving grace is in breaking Dante she broke also. The End? Uh not even. After weeks apart the two lovebirds end up in Paris for some much needed time together.

I thought Paris was the end of the story. I was like damn TB is pretty tame compared to SB. I should have known Dante wouldn't let us down! London's father is still a threat (read book 1 for full story) and Dante knows until he eliminates the threat, London will never be safe. Dante makes the ultimate sacrifice to save the love of his life.....man talk about a freakin tear jerker! After that stunt on the streets of Paris it was two days before I could pick up from that craziness! London's suffering is unreal. Jaci J did her thing exploiting London's anguish! Heavy stuff! Kudos Jaci girl!

The final 20% of the story is worth every single word, every bit of emotion, and every tear shed. Dante is the MAN! I absolutely love this dude and really hate TB is the end for this crazy couple. However I am more than satisfied with the conclusion of the series.

Five gazillion stars for this crazy emotional roller coaster!

So Disappointed

Talk about a huge disappointment in a sequel...I really enjoyed the first book and the way London spoke to Dante and what she said to him at the end of the first book I was really looking forward to starting the 2nd book...I really thought she was going to be this strong, confident woman that went up against him but all she turned out to be was a whiny, pathetic woman with 0 self respect. The book starts off with her having run off like a coward to Italy for 6 weeks. For someone so adamant about how her grandfathers company was so important to her, couldn't believe she ran instead of fighting. Also not sure how her constantly telling Dante that she hated him was that big of a deal when she pretty much still did everything he said and was still sleeping with him...words don't really mean all that much when your actions say something completely different...it got old annoying real quick when it seemed she said it to him so much...seriously...get some new lines. Her idea of revenge was throwing temper tantrums worse than a 2 year old. I expected a lot more from this book but it was really a let down.

Jaci J is a new writer to me and I'm so glad I had the chance to read this and Sick Bastard!

I found London and Dante to be so engaging and at times, I was rooting for them to make it work and at times screaming for one or both to walk away. The back and forth, love and hate, kept me on my toes and wondering where they would end up. I found myself mostly rooting for Dante, understanding that the difficulty of the life he came from lead him to be narcissistic and neurotic. Even with the lies and games, he loved London in the only way he knew how. London on the other hand had to accept a lot of change in a short time as her life tipped completely on it's head. Yeah, she had tantrums and at times acted like a 20 something... wait, she is a 20 something! Her reactions and actions struck me as being realistic to all the drama. I really enjoyed the books and highly recommend reading both. You're in for a ride, but the end is worth it!
