This is my second year with the "Your Best Year" workbook and Lisa has wowed me once again! I have a life coaching business that I get most of my clients online through my website. I followed the amazing workbook last year and it really helped me to meet my business and personal goals. I love how Lisa gives you examples of how the workbook should be filled out to help you along in your journey. I have started working on MBY2017 and I can't wait to see how it helps to propel me forward in my business and personal life. I would totally recommend this workbook to anyone who owns their own business or has been thinking about starting an online business. You will ROCK it with this book by your side!

This book is IT for me...

I am about a year into a tiny, product-based side business that has unexpectedly turned into something that I want to have earn a significant portion of my yearly income. But since the get-go, I have been in reactive mode, flying by the seat of my pants, and without a clear plan of attack - which, by pure luck, has worked for me up until this point. But right now, I’m at a critical crossroad and I know that if I don’t choose the right path, all of the time and money I’ve invested up to this point will be wasted, and I’ll lose the customer base and all of the momentum I’ve hustled to build so far.

I’m a “maker”, and perfectly happy to sit in my studio and make what I make. It’s hard for me to put myself out there, to market myself and my goods and ask for the sale, but it’s even harder for me to come up with a proactive, forward-thinking strategy to get me there.

I stumbled across Lisa’s blog earlier this year and her voice and planning tips really resonated with me as a creative entrepreneur, so getting her Your Best Year 2017 workbook was a no-brainer for me. Without hesitation, I can easily say that this book is going to be THE key to bringing my business to the next level this coming calendar year.

Just as a reference: I’m someone who buys entrepreneurial and small-business books often, but there is not ONE that I have been able to read cover-to-cover. Most of the books I’ve seen aren’t geared to very small, one-woman creative businesses like mine, and as a result so much of what’s out there doesn’t apply to me. It’s left me frustrated and overwhelmed, and without any advice or tips that I can relate to.

YBY2017 is a breath of fresh air. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for - a workbook that will guide me through the planning and strategies for what I want to achieve next year, with actionable (I cannot stress how important this word is to me enough) steps to get there. No general, way-above-my-head business philosophies meant for companies that don’t look a thing like mine - but rather a clearly-laid out plan of steps and stages to get you focused and productive, delivered in a voice that’s firm but friendly.

If you are an Etsy seller, a freelancer, a maker, a crafter - any type of creative entrepreneur - this workbook is a must-have. I highly recommend it, and I feel lucky to have stumbled upon Lisa’s expertise at a time when I needed it most.

Beats me. One size fits all philosophies often seem a bit strange to me. Can anybody really answer this question for every international student and ESL college student? Really? Don't circumstances, needs, and desires differ?

On the other hand, administrators, teachers, future college students, and current international ESL students constantly face this common question. What should every ESL student know?

Fortunately, braver and more confident souls feel comfortable answering this reasonable question. That's why a small green and purple book, What Every ESL Student Should Know: A Guide to College and University Academic Success, caught my eyes at a recent English teachers' conference in California. Kathy Ochoa Flores, the author, has both more confidence and deeper insight into this essential, yet puzzling, question. In 119 pages, she displays considerable wit while dispensing practical advice to international students and immigrants preparing for college.

"My students always want to know what they should do to learn English," notes Flores in chapter 2. "I tell them to marry an American - one who is a native speaker and rich. That way, they can have someone to practice with every day, and they won't have to worry about working and studying at the same time. Unfortunately, this advice does not work for most of my students."

So Flores goes on to advocate, since many students are already married or too young to get married, to at least make some American friends. In bold print, she argues: "Native English speakers are everywhere. Use them. They are like free tutors." How? Take the bus, sit down next to some nice looking American, and start talking. Seek out the elderly since they tend to have both more free time and might be lonely. Talk to children, meet a school counselor, and ask many questions. "Talk to the telemarketers who call you during dinner time, and ask them lots of questions about their products." I completely agree.

This affordable book provides dozens of these imperative statements followed by detailed advice. Written in a clear manner, the concise format and friendly style make this book a wonderful book for newcomers. Easier to read, smaller in scope, and less than controversial than the popular book What's Up, America?, this book serves a slightly different purpose. Both titles help international students adjust to American college campuses, but What Every ESL Student Should Know focuses more on survival skills. International counselors, orientation coordinators, and even English language schools could provide a real service to their students by including this thin book in their orientation sessions and pre-college materials. The minimum cost will pay for itself by reducing ESL student stress.

Meanwhile, future international students should find it and buy it. This "one size fits all" work offers enough tips to satisfy any ESL student - and even a sceptical ESL university teacher!

About the Author

David Stump, ASC has worked on numerous motion pictures and television productions as Director of Photography, as Visual Effects Director of Photography, and as a Visual Effects Supervisor, garnering Emmy nominations and an Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Achievement. A member of the Producer's Guild of America (PGA), the Visual Effects Society (VES), the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE), the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Stump has worked in Digital Visual Effects for over 25 years, since the advent of Computer Generated Images for film. In 2001 he was accepted for full membership into the American Society of Cinematographers, where he is currently chairman of the Camera and Metadata Subcommittees of the ASC Technical Committee.

Comprehensive, easy to read; a valuable reference for everyone in digital image production.

Much like Alexis Van Hurkman's book, Color Correction Handbook: Professional Techniques for Video and Cinema (2nd Edition) (Digital Video & Audio Editing Courses) has become the defacto standard in reference for digital color grading, I predict this book will become the defacto standard for Cinematographers seeking in-depth information on the fundamentals behind digital cinema image capture. David Stump takes great pains to delve into all aspects of how digital sensors work, the math behind image capture, the complexities of various imaging color spaces, current digital camera systems and a plethora of other issues germane to the subject, but conveys it in a easy-going, informative manner. I especially appreciate how he reaches back into the History of Cinema Production to tie the current technology to the past; showing that while there are revolutionary aspects to digital production, it in the end is a continuation of the process of moving image production evolution, and is yet another tool in the arsenal for moving image production, rather an an island onto itself. While targeted specifically at cinematographers, this book should not be overlooked by any member of the image production chain. The comprehensive information contained within is valuable to anyone who wishes to understand digital image production from start to finish and should be on the shelf of any DIT, Editor, Colorist or person with a need to understand the underlying mechanisms that are used to create a digital moving image. Highly recommended.

Lots Of Info, But A Little Over-The-Top

I'm very impressed by what the book covers. It extensively covers the technologies that digital cameras use. Everything from the sensor to the lens, and then discusses things like color spaces, sampling rates, aspect ratios etc. The the last half of the book is devoted to camera setup, workflows, and displays (monitors) and recorders. There's also mini sections on specific info about many of the pro/prosumer cameras (as of ~2013).

There's certainly some good (even great) info in this book. I especially enjoyed the section on lenses and camera setup/operation. What I really didn't like was the first half of the book, for me it was painful to slog through that info because of how it was presented, and that was information that I was actually very interested in. For me though, and let me preface this by saying that I have an engineering degree and have had lots of college level math and physics, I would have much preferred much fewer equations and graphs and charts and theorems, and history., and much more qualitative discussion about achieving various results, anecdotes about in-the-field situations etc. But judging by the other reviews, I may be in the minority with that opinion, which is fine.

Michael Mallory is a Los Angeles–based writer, journalist, and film-and-animation historian. He is the author of many nonfiction books on pop culture, including The Art of Krampus, Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe, X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe, Marvel: The Expanding Universe Wall Chart, Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy of Horror, and Iwao Takamoto: My Life with a Thousand Characters, which he co-wrote with animation legend Iwao Takamoto. In addition, he has written nearly 600 newspaper, magazine and online articles for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, and Animation Magazine. He lives in Los Angeles.

The Art of Krampus

I am a fan of director Michael Dougherty, whose last film "Trick 'r Treat" was immaculately designed - and it looks like he has done it again here because the film looks great.

The book "The Art of Krampus" allows fans to delve into the designs of the film. Inside you'll find wonderfully creepy designs of holiday icons - including snowmen, elves, and gingerbread men. It's fascinating to see something so innocent - such as a teddy bear - turned into something evil and quite scary. Then there's Krampus himself: the book discusses all aspects of the character (including casting an actor to inhabit the role; and designing his look and costume). Because Krampus is well-known in European mythology, the character already had certain defining characteristics (the horns, for example). But the filmmakers also had freedom to make their Krampus slightly unique and specific to their story. I love the final look of the character in the film, but it's also fascinating to see early concept art and variations of the character in this book.

Author Michael Mallory chronicles the entire journey of the film - script development and design work all the way through shooting and scoring. It was interesting to read about the challenges of filming and trying to capture as much in-camera as they could. The film utilizes practical effects, makeup, and puppetry whenever possible - digital effects were a last resort for things that could not be achieved another way. Given the quality of work on display, I wasn't surprised to learn that Weta Workshop was responsible for much of it. Weta is the best in the business, and the book shows the complexity of the animatronics and makeup effects used to bring the characters to life.

The book is full of imagery - this includes conceptual artwork and character sketches; storyboards of key sequences; and behind the scenes photos from the set and the creature shop. Photos are high-quality and the overall layout of the book is very pleasing. It all comes together to make "The Art of Krampus" a very interesting read for what is a compelling movie from a visionary filmmaker.

A perfect gift for my artist daughter!

My daughter is a conceptual artist and loves books like this one. The movie was excellent so it was interesting to see how the scenes, characters, and especially the monsters developed from idea to screen. A very nice book with beautiful heavy pages and sharp images. Well worth the money, if you love film art or horror flicks!

I ordered a new music book for my son. Waited the time for it to come. This was also a Christmas gift for him. When he received the book it wasn't in new condition. Some of the pages had tears on them. I paid the full price for this book. I was quite surprised by this, I didn't see the book because it was mailed directly to my son. Would I recommend this to others yes. My son loves this author and series of music books. Myself, no I was unhappy that the book was not of high quality.

I needed this book for an online college class, however I enjoyed reading it and learned a great deal about the processes of the earth and our impact on the earth. The only negative is that a few things are already outdated because science is constantly advancing and new things are discovered.

essential, fabulous book on accent

If you're looking for a book on accents this has to be the first one to buy. It's clear, informative, systematic and gives you the guidelines and principles for doing ANY accent. It's also playful and very accessible and backs up the text with a cd. A bonus: the book is beautifully designed and illustrated, of high quality paper, and a pleasure to handle. Every actor, acting student and voice teacher should own this, read it, and refer to it as an essential reference book when working on roles.

Constantly Changing the Way I View Accent Work

I already owned Robert Blumenfeld's "Accents: A Manual for Actors" which did fantastic things for my accent work. It's a complete overview of just about any accent you could think of.

However, those guidelines require an actor to already understand healthy accent practices which is what this book covers remarkably. It is constantly changing the way I view accents. Their "You and the New" system is terribly simple, but also terribly vital. This book contains all the necessary foundations required for teaching yourself a new accent: recordings, diagrams, documents, etc. Buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

Got this for a young thespian

She is always involved in plays and acting - of all things she finds passion in, it is the theater. I got her this book and she told me it was her favorite gift, and an apple product was in that running. Two years later she still uses it, and in more than one performance I've heard a well practiced accent.

The gal I got this for was 11 at the time. Maybe 10? Anyhow, a younger individual and she just adores it.

One of the best books on the topic

This is a very precise and well organized books. Every chapter is well justified and moreover each chapter contains relevant algorithms and psuedocode to address the problems discussed. This makes the book particularly practical and useful. Topics discussed follow each other naturally and the authors have done a great job of covering the topics conisely without going overboard.

Excellent intermediate textbook on Computer Vision

If you already understand image processing and the basics of computer vision, this book is a very good at concisely presenting more advanced algorithms to the reader. Also, because this book is so well organized, you can read it from beginning to end. Rest assured if you are looking at an algorithm on page 84, you will not need to skip ahead to later sections in the book to understand it. From the beginning, algorithms are named and presented in numbered steps for clarity of presentation. The book starts out with introductory material such as basic optics and the geometry of camera models. It continues with image denoising, as well as two full chapters devoted to image features and their detection. Finally, the more basic material concludes with a chapter on the mathematics of camera calibration. One aspect of vision that is often neglected in other computer vision books that is treated well here is that of motion. For those working in video processing, this might make this book a good selection. Also, the book gives one of the best discussions of eigenspaces that I have seen in print in chapter ten of the book, where the subject is recognition of 3D objects. I was able to code up the eigenfaces face recognition algorithm based almost entirely on the information found in chapter ten of this book. If you need an introduction to computer vision before tackling the more advanced material in this text, try Shapiro's book "Computer Vision" ISBN 0130307963. A good knowledge of linear algebra is necessary prior to understanding the algorithms in this book such as is found in Schaum's outline of Matrix Operations. Given the specific subject matter of this book, it would probably be an excellent choice for an engineer or scientist that is interested in computer vision as it relates to robotics.

Compared with Forsyth and Ponce's heavy book titled with "computer vision: a modern approach", this book is very concise, precise, and suitable to be used in classes. Definitions are carefully given. Pseudocode is extremely helpful for practical use. Also some sections about mathematics are appreciated to understand the underlying algorithms. If you want to learn more or do research, then read Forsyth's book after finishing reading this book. Several my collegues think this book is the first choice for new comers in this field.
